Nagpur Erupts in Violence Over Aurangzeb’s Tomb
NAGPUR: Late Monday, Nagpur witnessed violent clashes following protests demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Khultabad. The unrest left dozens wounded and resulted in widespread destruction.
Among the injured were at least 10 anti-riot commandos, two senior police officers, and two firemen. A police constable remains in critical condition. Mobs set fire to two bulldozers and 40 vehicles, including police vans, as security forces struggled to control the chaos.
Police Response and Arrests
In response to the violence, police arrested 50 rioters and launched a large-scale crackdown. Reports indicate that misinformation spread via social media played a significant role in escalating tensions. The unrest followed rumors that effigies of Aurangzeb were burned near Shivaji Putla Square, close to the RSS headquarters.
Security forces deployed riot-control measures, including water cannons and tear gas, to disperse the mobs. Despite efforts to restore order, sporadic violence continued in various neighborhoods.
Appeals for Calm
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari urged residents to remain calm and avoid believing rumors. Fadnavis emphasized that Nagpur is a city of harmony and coexistence.
