NHAI to Construct Elevated Corridor to Ease Ring Road Congestion in Delhi

Decongesting Delhi: NHAI’s Elevated Corridor Project

In a significant move to alleviate traffic congestion in the national capital, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to construct an elevated corridor between INA and Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. This ambitious project, which aims to decongest the Ring Road, was greenlit after being on hold for over four years.

Funding and Project Overview

Sources indicate that the project will be financed by the Delhi government and the Ministry of Urban Affairs. The NHAI plans to build a tunnel connecting Nelson Mandela Marg to the Shiv Murti interchange, facilitating seamless connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). This corridor will allow traffic from eastern and southern Delhi to travel non-stop to the airport.

Project Specifications

The proposed 14-km elevated corridor, which will traverse newly redeveloped government residential and commercial complexes along the Ring Road, received approval from the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) in July 2021. Initial plans designated the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to create the detailed project report (DPR) and oversee its execution, but the proposal faced delays in securing necessary approvals.

Current Developments

Following discussions in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), NHAI has been tasked with preparing the DPR based on the CPWD’s earlier work. Estimates suggest the project could cost approximately ₹4,500 crore, with potential tunnel components to adapt to ground conditions. With around 1.3 lakh vehicles traversing the AIIMS crossing daily, the urgency to commence this project cannot be overstated.

Future Prospects

Officials predict that traffic will only increase as more government employees relocate to the newly developed Sarojini Nagar and Nauroji Nagar complexes. Additionally, NHAI is exploring the feasibility of extending an elevated road from Nelson Mandela Marg to the Mehrauli-Gurgaon highway.
