Opposition Protests in Parliament Over Voter Card Fraud

NEW DELHI: In a significant display of political unity, opposition parties protested in Parliament on various pressing issues, primarily focusing on the alarming concern of “voter card fraud.” The Trinamool Congress (TMC) led the charge with a list of duplicate EPIC numbers, receiving backing from Congress, BJD, and other parties, culminating in a walkout during Rajya Sabha proceedings.
The TMC later sent a delegation of 10 MPs to the Election Commission (EC) to address concerns about alleged cloning of Aadhaar cards and the potential for these to be exploited for fraudulent voter registrations. Sagarika Ghose, TMC MP, expressed skepticism over the EC’s timeline for resolving these issues, emphasizing the serious threat to electoral democracy.

DMK’s Stand Against the Three-Language Policy

Simultaneously, DMK MPs protested against the three-language formula proposed under the new National Education Policy. They demanded an apology from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, rallying support from Congress MPs from Tamil Nadu who donned black attire in solidarity. The DMK criticized the policy, claiming it aimed at undermining regional languages and identities.

Delimitation Controversy

The delimitation issue also sparked tensions, with opposition members citing the adverse impact of constituency redrawing based on population. They highlighted how this could politically disadvantage states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which have implemented family planning, while benefiting states with higher fertility rates.
As the debate unfolded, the BJD sought an independent audit of the electoral process, echoing concerns raised by other opposition parties. The call for transparency in the electoral process has never been more critical.
