Aurangzeb Sparks Political Firestorm in Bihar: JD(U) Leader Praises Mughal Ruler

Aurangzeb Sparks Political Controversy in Bihar

PATNA: Bihar’s political landscape was ignited on Thursday when JD(U) MLC Khalid Anwar referred to Mughal ruler Aurangzeb as a “good king.” This statement quickly drew ire from both party colleagues and members of the NDA ally, BJP. BJP legislator Hari Bhushan Thakur called for Anwar’s expulsion from the House and suggested he should be sent to “Pakistan or Syria,” while JD(U) MLA Sanjeev Kumar demanded Anwar be relocated to Gaza.

The Triggering Statement

The political uproar began when Anwar defended SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi, who had been suspended from the Maharashtra assembly after praising Aurangzeb. Anwar stated, “Aurangzeb was not a cruel ruler, but a good king. It is the job of historians to discuss it, not UP CM Yogi Adityanath. Is he a historian?” He also took a jab at Yogi, suggesting he could learn governance from Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar.

Immediate Backlash

The backlash was rapid, with BJP’s Thakur leading the charge. He emphasized, “Aurangzeb was a cruel ruler who imprisoned his father, killed his brothers, destroyed several Hindu temples, and raped many women. If any person heaps praises on such a ruler, stern legal action must be initiated against him, be it from JD(U) or my own party.” Thakur’s demands included Anwar’s disqualification and the renaming of places associated with Aurangzeb and Bakhtiyar Khilji in Bihar.

Political Landscape Ahead

This incident highlights the ongoing tension within Indian politics, particularly regarding historical narratives and their implications in contemporary governance. As the situation unfolds, many are left wondering how this will affect Bihar’s political climate moving forward.
