NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently addressed the Kashmir situation during a session titled “India’s Rise and Role in the World” at the Chatham House think tank in London. He highlighted significant steps taken by the Indian government to address issues in Kashmir, including the removal of Article 370.
Key Steps in Resolving Kashmir Issues
Jaishankar stated, “In Kashmir, we have done a good job solving most of it. Removing Article 370 was one step, followed by restoring economic activity and social justice.” He emphasized the importance of the recent elections in Kashmir, which saw high voter turnout, as a vital step in this process.
He also mentioned, “The key aspect we await is the return of the stolen part of Kashmir currently under illegal Pakistani occupation. Once that is accomplished, I assure you, Kashmir will be solved.”
Broader International Relations
Jaishankar discussed the evolving dynamics of international relations, particularly regarding the United States. He noted that the Trump administration is moving towards a multipolar world, aligning with India’s interests. “We see a president and an administration which, in our parlance, is moving towards multipolarity,” he remarked.
He further elaborated on the Quad alliance involving the US, India, Australia, and Japan, emphasizing the need for equitable contributions from all parties involved.
Strengthening Trade Relations
On trade relations, Jaishankar mentioned ongoing discussions regarding a bilateral trade agreement. He stated, “We had a very open conversation about it and agreed on the need for a bilateral trade agreement.”
Engaging with Global Economies
Jaishankar also touched upon India’s relationship with China and the internationalization of the Rupee. He expressed a desire for a relationship with China that respects mutual interests and sensitivities.
