Weather Disruptions in Himachal Pradesh: Fresh Snowfall and Rain
KULLU: The picturesque regions of Lahaul Spiti and the higher reaches of Kinnaur, Shimla, and Chamba districts have encountered fresh snowfall, while moderate to heavy rain has affected the low and mid-hills. This weather has led to the Himachal Pradesh school education board postponing Class X and XII exams in Lahaul Spiti and Chamba’s Pangi subdivision.
Impact on Education
The first five exams for Class VIII to XII, scheduled from March 4 to 8, have been deferred due to the inability to deliver question papers and exam materials. Kalpa in Kinnaur recorded a snowfall of 1cm, while all 165 roads in Lahaul Spiti remain blocked for the sixth consecutive day. Power outages are affecting many areas, and over 700 stranded tourists in Spiti were safely relocated by police.
Current Weather Conditions
Keylong reported the lowest minimum temperature at -10.2°C on Monday. Other hill stations recorded the following temperatures: Shimla at 6.2°C, Manali at 1.6°C, Dharamshala at 4.2°C, and Dalhousie at 6.3°C. The Met department has forecast light to moderate rain and snow in the coming days, with an ‘orange’ warning for light to moderate snowfall in several areas.
River Flow Resumes
In a related note, the icy Chenab river resumed its flow on Monday after an avalanche had blocked it near Jahlma village, raising water levels and posing a threat to nearby infrastructure.
