India to Unveil Most Powerful Rail Engine in Just One Month
DAHOD (GUJARAT): India is set to revolutionize its rail freight operations with the introduction of the country’s most powerful and modern rail engine, boasting an impressive 9,000 horsepower (HP). This cutting-edge locomotive is engineered to pull freight trains with a capacity of 4,500-5,000 tonnes at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the production progress at the Dahod Workshop, highlighting that 89% of the engine components are “Made in India.” This workshop, the first of its kind in Gujarat, is pivotal in driving the “Make in India” initiative forward.
Challenge to Engineers
Minister Vaishnaw issued a challenge to engineers and technical professionals to achieve 100% indigenous manufacturing of these powerful engines. He emphasized the significant export potential of this technology, stating, “The first loco will be ready for launch in 30-40 days.”
Enhancing Freight Train Efficiency
Increasing the speed of freight trains is a primary focus for Indian Railways. With the deployment of more high HP and high-speed locomotives, the average speed of freight trains can improve, leading to quicker track clearance and increased operational efficiency.
The new 9,000 HP engines will mark a significant advancement over the 12,000 HP electric locomotives produced in 2020, which had two engines, whereas the Dahod models will feature a single-engine design.
Innovative Features
These state-of-the-art locomotives will incorporate a digital tracking system called Kavach, along with green features and a 3-phase propulsion system. The Dahod workshop is set to produce broad gauge electric locomotives for Indian Railways and standard gauge locomotives for export.
Investing in Future Projects
In addition to the locomotive production, Minister Vaishnaw also reviewed the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Bullet Train project, showcasing ongoing infrastructure improvements that promise to transform India’s rail network.
