told TOI that the EU is committed to upholding the rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific and reinforcing defence cooperation with India. Responding to Trump’s tariff threats, she emphasized that the EU will respond to any unjustified tariff.
Strengthening EU-India Ties
As PM Narendra Modi hosts European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week, both sides are preparing for another round of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) talks next month. The president expressed optimism about achieving an agreement, noting that there are 6,000 EU companies in India, creating 8 million jobs. “Let’s finish what we started, for the benefit of both our economies,” she said.
Key Areas of Cooperation
Von der Leyen outlined plans to enhance cooperation in trade, technology, and security. With a new Strategic Agenda on the horizon, the EU aims to advance discussions on a free trade agreement, digital technologies, and clean technologies like electric vehicles and green hydrogen.
Addressing Trade Wars
In light of President Trump’s trade threats, von der Leyen remarked, “There are no winners in a trade war.” She reiterated that unjustified tariffs will not go unanswered, emphasizing the importance of protecting workers and consumers.
