Virat Kohli’s Path to Surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s Century Record
Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has expressed his belief that Virat Kohli has the potential to break Sachin Tendulkar’s legendary record of 100 international centuries. At 36 years old, Kohli currently stands at 82 centuries across all formats, with his latest century coming during a recent Champions Trophy match against Pakistan.
Kohli’s Form and Fitness
Jaffer emphasized Kohli’s remarkable form, stating, “As a cricket fan, you want to see Virat as much as you can. Nobody wants to see him get out. When he makes runs, everybody is happy.” He believes Kohli has at least three to four more years of competitive cricket, which could be enough time for him to surpass Tendulkar’s record.
Breaking Records
“When Sachin Tendulkar made 100 centuries, it looked like it would never be broken. But the way Virat has been scoring runs since 2010, it seems likely he will break that seemingly impossible record,” Jaffer added.
The Rising Star: Shubman Gill
While praising Kohli’s achievements, Jaffer also highlighted the talent of Shubman Gill. He noted that it would be unfair to compare Gill to Kohli, as the young cricketer is carving his own path. “Shubman is making his own road. He is playing terrific cricket,” Jaffer remarked.
Herschelle Gibbs’ Perspective
Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs echoed Jaffer’s sentiments, asserting that Kohli’s fitness and hunger for runs suggest he can play for at least another four years. Gibbs stated, “The way he copes with pressure, especially while chasing in ODI cricket, is phenomenal.” He also praised Shubman Gill as a “special talent” who is technically sound.
India’s Champions Trophy Prospects
With India looking formidable in the Champions Trophy, Gibbs believes they are favorites to win the tournament. The excitement surrounding Kohli, Gill, and the entire Indian team makes this cricketing season one to watch.
