Congress Accuses Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma of Rampant Corruption
NEW DELHI: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Assam, the Congress party has made serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of rampant corruption and police repression. Congress leaders questioned whether the Prime Minister’s Office would investigate the widespread allegations against Sarma, highlighting the growing concerns over governance in the state.
Unfulfilled Promises and Rising Debt
The Congress party criticized the BJP government for failing to fulfill its promises, including increasing wages for tea garden workers and including six ethnic groups in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. They alleged that while corruption reaches new heights, Assam’s debt has ballooned to an alarming Rs 1.5 lakh crore, a significant increase from Rs 10,000 crore during the Congress regime.
Allegations Against CM Sarma
During a press conference coinciding with PM Modi’s visit, Assam Congress leaders, including AICC state in-charge Jitendra Singh and state president Bhupen Borah, presented a purported police report from 1999, which allegedly identified Sarma as an ULFA “extremist.” They claimed that Sarma has coerced tea garden owners into selling their properties and has engaged in various business ventures, including opening a resort in a wildlife corridor.
Calls for Accountability
Congress leaders demanded to know why Prime Minister Modi has not acted on these allegations of corruption. They criticized Sarma’s governance, stating that “jungle raj” is evident in Assam, pointing to recent incidents of violence and lawlessness. Gaurav Gogoi labeled the BJP a “factory of lies” and expressed concerns about Sarma’s reliance on police to maintain control amidst fears of upcoming assembly elections.
Conclusion
As the political landscape in Assam becomes increasingly contentious, the Congress party continues to press for accountability and transparency from the ruling government. For the latest news and updates, visit Looffers.com.
