USAID Allocates $97 Million for Seven Development Projects in India Amid Political Controversy

New Delhi, Feb 23 (PTI) – For the financial year 2023-24, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has committed a total of $97 million (approximately ₹825 crore) to fund seven key projects in India. This funding comes at a time when USAID’s role in Indian elections has sparked significant political debate.

Overview of USAID’s Funding

According to the latest annual report from the Finance Ministry, USAID is currently implementing seven projects with a total budget of approximately $750 million in partnership with the Government of India. The funding is primarily directed towards sectors such as agriculture, water and sanitation, renewable energy, disaster management, and health, but notably excludes any allocations for enhancing voter turnout.

Details of Funded Projects

The projects backed by USAID this year include initiatives for Sustainable Forests and Climate Adaptation, along with the Energy Efficiency Technology Commercialization and Innovation Project. The Department of Economic Affairs has provided comprehensive details regarding these projects in its report.

Historical Context of USAID in India

USAID’s involvement in India dates back to 1951, with over $17 billion disbursed across more than 555 projects since its inception. Despite the ongoing controversies, the agency’s commitment to various development sectors remains steadfast.

Political Controversy and Reactions

The funding announcement has coincided with political turmoil, particularly after claims emerged regarding a $21 million grant intended to boost voter turnout. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed concerns over these allegations, emphasizing that USAID was invited to operate in India “in good faith.”

In contrast, the Congress party has accused the ruling BJP of spreading misinformation and failing to address these contentious issues adequately. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted that the alleged funding was misrepresented, clarifying that it was actually earmarked for Bangladesh.
