Vasundhara Oswal’s Ordeal in Uganda: A Tale of Injustice
NEW DELHI: Vasundhara Oswal, the daughter of Indian-origin billionaire Pankaj Oswal, recently shared her harrowing experience of wrongful imprisonment in Uganda. Accused of kidnapping and murdering her father’s former employee, Vasundhara describes her treatment as a “gross violation of human rights.”
A Case Built on Lies
On October 1, 2024, Vasundhara was arrested under false allegations. The supposed victim, Mukesh Menaria, was later found alive in Tanzania, yet she remained imprisoned for weeks. “I was detained for five days, then thrown in prison for two weeks,” she recounted. Her situation worsened as she was denied basic necessities, and her family had to bribe officials for food and hygiene products.
Arrested Without a Warrant
Vasundhara was taken from her home without a warrant. “They said, ‘We are in Uganda, we can do anything,’” she recalled. This unlawful arrest led to a series of further injustices, including being forced to pay a $30,000 police bond, even after the case against her began to crumble.
Seeking Justice
Now free, Vasundhara is determined to hold the Ugandan government accountable for her unjust treatment. “This is how they treat us after we have invested in their country?” she questioned.
