Kuki Students’ Organisation: A Beacon of Hope in Manipur
GUWAHATI: The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) has made a significant impact by operating six community schools in Churachandpur and neighboring districts of conflict-affected Manipur. Since March last year, these schools have been providing education to over 2,000 students from internally displaced families.
Addressing the Educational Crisis
More than 90% of the students come from families that were forced to flee their homes due to the violence that erupted in May 2023, destroying numerous dwellings and leading to the loss of lives. The KSO schools are filling a critical gap, offering a pathway for these children to continue their education amidst the turmoil.
Progress and Improvement
With classes up to the seventh standard, students have shown remarkable progress. One batch recently transitioned to Class 8 in nearby government schools, while students in lower classes have also demonstrated academic improvement. This positive trend comes as government schools are overwhelmed, with enrolment nearly tripling their capacity.
Zero Dropout Initiative
In response to the escalating educational crisis, KSO launched the “Zero Dropout” project in October 2023, sustained through donations and crowdfunding. DJ Haokip, KSO’s Churachandpur district general secretary, noted that many students from relief camps in Tuibong have enrolled in their schools.
Support and Contributions
As the situation continues to evolve, initiatives like those by KSO are crucial in ensuring that education remains accessible to all. Support from the community and organizations can help sustain these efforts.
