Delhi Capitals’ Last-Ball Victory: A Thrilling Encounter Marred by Controversy
New Delhi: In a nail-biting finish, Delhi Capitals clinched a dramatic last-ball victory over Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), but not without stirring up a storm of debate. The match was overshadowed by two contentious third-umpire run-out decisions that left fans and experts questioning the interpretation of crucial rules.
With 25 runs needed from 15 balls, Shikha Pandey found herself in a precarious position after a risky bye attempt. A direct hit at the striker’s end had her scrambling to make her ground. As the LED stumps lit up, it appeared she was short. However, after a lengthy review, third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan ruled her not out, citing the rule that considers the moment the bails are fully dislodged.
A similar incident unfolded just seven balls later with Radha Yadav, who attempted a quick single but was sent back. Despite replays showing her bat hovering above the crease when the LED lights first flashed, the third umpire deemed her safe as the bails were not completely removed until her bat was down.
These decisions sparked visible frustration from MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who engaged in discussions with the on-field umpires. To add to Mumbai’s troubles, Yadav hit a six on the very next ball, easing the chase for Delhi.
According to WPL playing conditions, both run-outs could have been ruled out, as the rules state that the moment the wicket is down is considered the first frame in which the LED lights illuminate.
Despite the controversies, Delhi Capitals celebrated a significant win, but discussions surrounding run-out protocols in the WPL are far from over.
