Delhi-Katra Expressway Delayed: One More Year to Wait
NEW DELHI: Travelers hoping for a non-stop journey from Delhi to Katra via the new expressway will have to exercise some patience. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that two sections of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway in Punjab are now expected to be completed by March 2026, with an additional two links scheduled for readiness by April 2027.
This ambitious 667-km greenfield expressway, with a hefty budget of Rs 40,000 crore, aims to significantly reduce the travel time between Delhi and Katra to under eight hours. Initially, the government had set a target for completion by the end of 2023, but delays have pushed this timeline further.
Reasons for Delay
According to government officials, the project has faced several obstacles, including land acquisition issues and contractual disputes in Punjab. Notably, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has had to terminate the contract for one 30-km package due to these challenges. The ministry has assured that work will resume once land acquisition issues are resolved.
However, it’s not all bad news! The 158 km stretch of the expressway in Haryana is expected to be completed by April, providing some relief to travelers in the region.
The Route
The four-lane expressway will commence from Kundli Manesar Palwal (KMP) near Bahadurgarh, making it a vital link for those traveling to Katra.
