Dehradun School Reverses Ban on Students Attending Farewell After Controversy

Dehradun School Rescinds Controversial Farewell Party Notice

In a recent turn of events, the Army Public School in Birpur, Dehradun, has revoked its controversial notice mandating a minimum of 60% marks in pre-board exams for students to attend the farewell party. The notice, issued by the principal on February 1, sparked outrage and was widely circulated on social media.

Intervention from the State Child Rights Commission

Following complaints regarding the notice, the state child rights commission intervened, summoning the principal for clarification. S K Barnwal, the commission’s secretary, stated, “After our intervention, the school has rescinded the notice, allowing all students to participate in the farewell.” This decision reflects a growing concern over the impact such policies can have on student morale, particularly so close to board exams.

Concerns Over Academic Pressure

The commission highlighted that while verbal reminders might encourage students to perform better, a written ultimatum can be detrimental. “Scoring low in pre-boards does not define a student’s overall ability,” Barnwal added. “Preventing them from attending a significant social event is both unfair and distressing.”

The Importance of Farewell Events

Arif Khan, president of the National Association for Parents and Students Rights, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that farewell parties are pivotal experiences for students. “Such notices, especially before board exams, can severely affect mental health. Every student deserves to celebrate their journey regardless of their academic performance,” he remarked.

Looking Towards Future Events

As students prepare for their board exams, it’s vital to foster an environment that encourages growth rather than discouragement. Schools must prioritize student well-being and ensure that all students feel valued and included during significant milestones.
