33 Gujarat Deportees Return from US: Dreams Shattered, Lives in Ruins

33 Gujaratis Deported from the US: A Heartbreaking Tale of Dreams Shattered

AHMEDABAD: A wave of despair swept across Gujarat as 33 illegal immigrants, including 13 women and 8 children, were deported from the US and landed in Ahmedabad early Thursday. The deportees, faces masked and without luggage, were swiftly taken to police vehicles awaiting them at the airport.

Having invested between ₹75 lakh to ₹1 crore in pursuit of their ‘American Dream’, these individuals returned home with shattered hopes and mounting debts. They were among a larger group of 104 Indians deported this week under the ‘catch and release’ policy of the Trump administration.

Personal Stories of Trauma

Varun, the brother of 29-year-old Khushbu Patel, shared his anguish: “My sister was handcuffed during the deportation. She hasn’t talked much with us. She had gone to the US on a tourist visa, and we have no idea why she was deported.” Many deportees, like Khushbu, have chosen to avoid social scrutiny by remaining incommunicado.

Of the 33 deportees, 18 had been apprehended just as Trump assumed the presidency. They entered the US on January 19 and 20, only to find themselves in the hands of immigration authorities.

A Hub for Human Smuggling

Sources indicate that the majority of the deportees were smuggled into the US through the Mexico border, a route notorious for human trafficking. “The smugglers pushed them to enter the US before Trump took office, fearing stricter immigration policies,” a source revealed.

The remaining 15 individuals had been in the US for durations ranging from one month to four years, yet none were granted permission to stay, despite seeking asylum due to political persecution.

A Cautionary Tale

Jignesh Zala, a deportee from Gandhinagar, described the traumatic experience: “We crossed into the US with our twin daughters. The journey was harrowing, and being sent back in cuffs was a nightmare.” His story serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with illegal immigration.
