India and US Strengthen Defence Ties Ahead of Modi-Trump Summit

NEW DELHI: In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, India and the United States have agreed to develop an “ambitious” defence cooperation agenda ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s summit with President Donald Trump next week. This was the outcome of a recent telephonic conversation between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth.

Comprehensive Defence Framework

The two nations reviewed extensive defence cooperation activities across various domains including land, air, maritime, and space. They committed to enhancing technology cooperation, integrating defence-industrial supply chains, and improving interoperability and logistics. The discussions also encompassed joint military exercises and information sharing.

Innovation and Collaboration

Both ministers emphasized the importance of supporting the growing defence innovation collaboration between their governments, start-ups, businesses, and academic institutions. This partnership is set to draft a comprehensive framework for defence cooperation, aiming to structure collaboration from 2025 to 2035.

Historical Context

Since 2007, the US has secured over $25 billion in lucrative defence deals with India. As the Trump administration pushes for more agreements, the groundwork for future cooperation is being laid.
