Government Awaits Response from Manmohan Singh’s Family on Memorial Site
NEW DELHI: Almost a month has passed since the government extended an offer for a memorial site at Rashtriya Smriti in the Rajghat complex for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. As of now, the family has yet to respond. Sources indicate that the government is prepared to allocate ₹25 lakh for the construction of the memorial, contingent upon the formation of a trust dedicated to this purpose.
Memorial Location and Historical Context
On January 16, it was reported by TOI that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has earmarked 1.5 acres for the memorial, conveniently located adjacent to the site designated for the samadhi of former President Pranab Mukherjee. The Rashtriya Smriti, developed along the banks of the Yamuna River, serves as a collective space for the last rites and memorials of Presidents, Vice Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other distinguished leaders.
Current Memorials and Future Plans
Presently, the site features memorials for seven prominent leaders, including former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee, P. V. Narasimha Rao, and I. K. Gujral. The remaining two sites have been specifically earmarked for Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee. Sources suggest that had the government conducted the last rites of the former Prime Minister at Smriti Sthal, as per the Cabinet’s approval on May 16, 2013, it might have mitigated any ensuing controversies.
