Jharkhand’s Soren Threatens Coal Mining Halt Over Rs 1.36 Lakh Crore Dues

Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Stern Warning to the Centre

RANCHI: In a bold address during the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) 53rd foundation day in Dhanbad, Chief Minister Hemant Soren issued a strong ultimatum to the Centre regarding coal-related dues amounting to Rs 1.36 lakh crore. He emphasized that if the government does not take serious steps to clear these dues, his administration will resort to legal actions and even shut down coal mining operations in the state.

A History of Neglect

Soren lamented the “step-brotherly treatment” Jharkhand has received over the years, stating, “This has to stop now. If we take a tough step, then the whole country will plunge into darkness.” He criticized the Centre for its silence on the issue, highlighting that local MPs have also failed to raise the matter in Parliament.

Land Acquisition Disputes

In a recent meeting with Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, Soren was asked to reduce the land acquisition costs for coal companies. He firmly rejected this request, stating, “If they were interested, they would have to acquire land at existing rates.”

Crackdown on Corruption

Additionally, Soren announced a forthcoming crackdown on the collaboration between land sharks and government officials engaged in dubious land deals. He warned that all Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Circle Officers (COs) involved in these activities would face arrest and termination from service.
