SC Orders Forensic Report on Manipur CM’s Controversial Audio Clips

Supreme Court Seeks Forensic Report on Manipur CM’s Controversial Audio Clips

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India has ordered the Central Forensic Science Laboratory to investigate audio clips that allegedly feature Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh discussing the looting of state armories by Meitei militants during recent ethnic conflicts. This development comes as the state grapples with the aftermath of severe unrest that has resulted in over 200 fatalities since May 2023.

Request for Report in Six Weeks

During a recent hearing, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar instructed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to submit the forensic report in a sealed cover within six weeks. This measure aims to prevent the potential escalation of tensions in a region that is slowly returning to normalcy.

Allegations of Incitement

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the Kuki group, claimed that a recording exists of Chief Minister Singh allegedly boasting about facilitating the Meitei militants’ actions. Bhushan has called for the matter to be examined by Truth Lab, citing its efficiency compared to government-run labs.

Historical Context of Conflict

The conflict erupted in May 2023 following a directive from the Manipur High Court regarding a long-standing demand from the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, a change that the Kuki community views as a direct threat to their interests.

In this charged atmosphere, the Supreme Court is tasked with determining the authenticity of the audio clips while considering the broader implications for peace in Manipur. Further hearings are scheduled for March 24.
