NEW DELHI: As the clock ticks down to the Delhi elections, a report concerning illegal immigration has ignited a firestorm of controversy. Authored by professors from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the report titled “Illegal Immigrants to Delhi: Analysing Socio-economic and Political Consequences” suggests that unauthorized settlements are exacerbating the growth of slums and unplanned colonies, thereby straining the city’s already burdened infrastructure, healthcare, and education systems.

Official sources from JNU clarified that this report is part of a regular study funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), initiated in October 2024. Moushumi Basu, president of JNUTA, stated, “The timing is questionable. This is reminiscent of the release of a similar Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) report just before the Maharashtra elections.” She emphasized that academic research should not echo government rhetoric, questioning whether all JNU faculty projects are given equal visibility.

The report reveals that illegal immigration has notably altered Delhi’s demographic landscape, with significant influxes from Bangladesh and Myanmar. It highlights overcrowded neighborhoods like Seelampur and Jamia Nagar, where resources are strained and social cohesion is disrupted.
