Uttarkashi’s Earthquake Swarm: A Wake-up Call for Residents
Dehradun: Uttarkashi, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, recently experienced a series of seven consecutive earthquakes between January 24 and 31, with magnitudes ranging from 2.7 to 3.5. This unusual seismic activity has sparked panic among local residents.
The tremors began on January 24, with three consecutive quakes, the strongest measuring 3.5. A 2.7-magnitude quake followed the next day, and tremors of the same magnitude occurred on January 29, 30, and 31. Most of these quakes were centered around the Bhatwari and Badkot areas of the district.
Understanding Earthquake Swarms
Uttarkashi is situated in Zone IV of India’s seismic zonation map, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. The region has a history of devastating quakes, including the catastrophic event in 1991 that claimed over 700 lives.
Experts, including Vineet Kumar Gahalaut from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, have classified these tremors as an “Earthquake Swarm.” This phenomenon occurs when multiple small quakes happen in a short period in a specific area. Gahalaut noted that these swarms can be caused by fluids interacting with geological faults.
Impact on Residents
While these tremors have not caused significant damage, they have left many residents on edge. Fearing further quakes, some families have opted to spend nights outdoors, away from potential hazards.
Seismologists have long warned of a significant earthquake looming in the Himalayas. However, Gahalaut cautioned that it remains uncertain whether this swarm indicates a larger earthquake is imminent.
As the seismic activity continues, senior geologist Piyoosh Rautela suggests that these quakes may be Nature’s way of cautioning against human activities in seismically active regions.
