CAB President Snehasish Ganguly Backs Gautam Gambhir Amid India’s Cricket Struggles
In a show of unwavering support, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly has come forward to back head coach Gautam Gambhir during a challenging phase for Indian cricket. Despite the team’s recent poor performance, including losses to Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Ganguly believes Gambhir deserves more time to prove his mettle.
Since taking over as head coach, Gambhir has faced scrutiny after India lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years. The team briefly regained composure with a win against Bangladesh but quickly faltered again, culminating in a historic defeat against New Zealand, where India experienced a whitewash at home for the first time in 24 years. The situation worsened further with a 1-3 series loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, marking a significant downturn for the Indian team.
Ganguly emphasized the need for patience, citing Gambhir’s successful history with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a testament to his coaching capabilities. “I feel happy because of his approach. As a coach, he got success for KKR after 12 years. We should give him some time,” Ganguly stated.
Looking ahead, Gambhir’s next challenge will be a five-match Twenty20 International series against England, followed by three One-Day Internationals. This series will serve as a crucial preparation for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
In addition to backing Gambhir, Ganguly expressed excitement over Mohammed Shami’s anticipated return to the field. Shami, who has been in remarkable form playing for Bengal, is set to perform in front of his home crowd at Eden Gardens after a year-long absence. “He seems to be in great shape. He looks like the old Mohammed Shami—fit and raring to go,” Ganguly noted, highlighting the anticipation surrounding Shami’s comeback.
