Techie Extorted Rs 12 Crore by Cyber Fraudsters Posing as Officials

Cyber Fraud Alert: Techie Loses Rs 12 Crore in Digital Scam

BENGALURU: In a shocking incident that underscores the rising threat of cyber fraud, three individuals were arrested for extorting nearly Rs 12 crore from a techie, Vijay Kumar KS, by posing as officials from the Customs and Enforcement Directorate. The fraudulent activities reportedly took place over the course of nearly a month last November.

The Operation Unraveled

The police apprehended Karan (24), Dhaval Bhai Shah (35), both from Gujarat, and Tarun Natani (26) from Delhi. They also seized Rs 3.7 crore from various bank accounts linked to the suspects. Authorities are currently on the lookout for additional suspects who managed to evade arrest, with the kingpin believed to be operating from Dubai.

How the Scam Worked

The ordeal began when Kumar received a call on November 11 from someone claiming to be a TRAI official. This caller alleged that Kumar’s identification documents were involved in illegal activities. The call was then transferred to another individual, who falsely identified himself as a Mumbai police officer.

Such scams highlight the need for vigilance when dealing with unknown callers and requests for personal information. It’s essential to report suspicious calls to the authorities immediately.
