Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Journey: A Mixed Bag of Results
NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach has been the subject of much debate, with performances across formats raising eyebrows. His success in T20 cricket is noteworthy, yet the inconsistency in Tests and ODIs has led to scrutiny regarding his leadership.
India started Gambhir’s coaching era on a high note with a 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh. However, the momentum quickly faded, as the team faced a 0-3 defeat to New Zealand and a disappointing 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Dinesh Karthik commented on the situation, stating, “The Bangladesh series was a success, but post that, things have gone downhill for him in Tests.”
Karthik emphasized the challenges Gambhir faces as he steps into the shoes of Rahul Dravid, a highly successful coach. “You’ve got to give Gambhir some slack. It’s never easy to fill those shoes,” he remarked.
In the ODI format, Gambhir’s record is also underwhelming, with a series loss against Sri Lanka marking a rocky start. Karthik noted, “They haven’t played too much, but they lost the series against Sri Lanka. So, it hasn’t been easy in Tests and a very small sample size for ODIs.”
Despite these challenges, Gambhir has made significant strides in T20 cricket, showcasing his ability to connect with younger players. “He has found immense success in T20 cricket and has been able to influence them positively,” Karthik remarked.
The road ahead for Gambhir involves aligning his vision with the players’ mindset. Karthik concluded, “The pressure is mounting. He must provide freedom and security in the dressing room while letting players tackle their challenges on the field.”
