The Maharashtra Cabinet mandated that starting from April 1, 2025, all vehicles operating in the state should have a FASTag system installed. All you need to know about the electronic toll collection system.
The Maharashtra cabinet announced that from April 1, 2025, all vehicles in the state must have a FASTag sticker. This electronic toll collection system not only offers the convenience of cashless payment but also helps motorists save on fuel and time by eliminating the need to stop at toll plazas.
What is a FASTag?
A FASTag is a sticker tag governed by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is fitted to vehicles to streamline the toll collection process, reducing human intervention.
Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, FASTags allow for the scanning of tags from a distance, enabling toll fees to be deducted directly from bank accounts or digital wallets.
How does FASTag work?
The FASTag is affixed to a vehicle’s windscreen and linked to a prepaid account. As vehicles pass through toll gates, payments are processed through RFID technology.
Once activated, the appropriate toll amount is automatically deducted whenever a vehicle passes through a FASTag-enabled toll plaza. Users receive alerts via SMS or email for each transaction, making it easy to track toll expenses.
Moreover, FASTag helps reduce paperwork and curb corruption at toll plazas, making travel smoother and more transparent.
