Police Investigate Duplicate Cars with Identical Number Plates in Mumbai

Two Identical Cars with the Same Number Plates Spark Police Investigation in Mumbai

In a peculiar incident that unfolded in the bustling streets of South Mumbai, two identical Ertiga cars sporting the same license plates were spotted, igniting a police investigation. The original vehicle owner, Sakir Ali, reported the baffling encounter after coming across a duplicate while en route to drop off a client near the iconic Gateway of India.

A Close Encounter

“When I was going to drop my client, I saw another car with the same number plate. The owner of the car with the same number plate tried to run away when I approached him. The traffic police caught him…I had complained about this earlier too, but no action was being taken,” Ali recounted. The car in question bore the registration number MH01 EE 2388, which led to an investigation when both vehicles were brought to the Colaba Police Station.

The Investigation Unfolds

The police discovered that the other car’s owner had altered the registration details to evade a car loan repayment. Prasad Kadam, a resident of Seawoods in Navi Mumbai, had intentionally modified his car’s number plate after falling behind on payments to Chola Mandlam, the finance company that issued the loan.

“The incident came to light at around 12:30 pm when someone observed that two SUVs were parked close to each other outside a hotel. Traffic police were informed, and a probe is underway to determine which number plate is authentic,” a police official confirmed.

What’s Next?

The Colaba Police continue to investigate, recording statements from both drivers. The outcome of the investigation remains pending, but this incident highlights the lengths to which some individuals might go to escape financial obligations.
