Anxious about HMPV? Here’s all you need to know
What is HMPV?
The human metapneumovirus (HMPV) was discovered in 2000 by Dutch scientists investigating acute respiratory infections. By 2001, they had sequenced the virus, revealing its circulation in the Netherlands since 1958. Recent months have seen a surge in HMPV detections, particularly in early 2023.
Should you be worried?
Dr. Rajesh Karyakarte, a microbiology professor, states that while HMPV infections are typically mild or asymptomatic, they can lead to severe illness in individuals with underlying conditions. Unlike Covid-19, HMPV has been around for a long time, and there is no evidence of increased spread in India.
How does it spread?
HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets, with symptoms manifesting as common cold-like signs in mild cases, and pneumonia in severe cases. It has a 3 to 5-day incubation period, and currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine.
Testing for HMPV
Advanced testing methods like the BioFire panel can detect HMPV, though these tests can be costly in private labs.
Why are we seeing cases now?
The recent surge may be attributed to ‘immunity debt’ in children born during the pandemic, who are now more vulnerable. Climate factors also play a role; cold, dry air can compromise our nasal barriers, facilitating virus entry.
